Kindergarten students read with headlamps in a camping scene in West Buncombe Elementary's theater.

🏕️📚 At West Buncombe Elementary School (WBES), reading is an immersive experience.

As part of their monthly “Reading is an Adventure” series, the school’s Literacy Team transforms everyday reading time into something magical. On May 16, the school theater became a cozy campground of imagination. Headlamps and decorative “fires” lit the dark room while students curled up with their favorite books in tents, camping chairs, and inflatable rafts. Crickets chirped in the theater speakers, and a night sky scene played on the projector screen. To top it off, each student earned a coin to spend at the school’s book vending machine- an extra incentive to keep the pages turning.

"It's a fun way to promote reading and get students excited about books," said Lori McCourry, literacy coach at WBES. "It brings the school together and connects creativity with reading."

The monthly event is designed to inspire a lifelong love of literacy in a creative, community-building environment. Based on the buzz in the “campsite,” the adventure is working.
