Charles T. Koontz Intermediate set a new record in an effort to give back to the community.

The school participated in a month-long sock drive known as Socktober. Students and staff worked diligently to collect socks for a local shelter. At most shelters, socks are one of the most needed items. This student-led effort to help those at the shelter caused the kids to set a goal of 500 pairs of socks. At the end of the collection, students and staff were amazed by the record-breaking total collected.

“I was absolutely floored when I realized we had collected 784 pairs of socks,” said fifth grade teacher Olivia Hedrick. “It was a really humbling moment for me, and I am so glad I could experience it with my classes. Students saw firsthand the difference they can make in our community. In my opinion, if we aren't teaching children how to be better humans, we aren't doing this right.”

The socks will go to those at the Western North Carolina Rescue Ministries. Ms. Hedrick said they plan to bring this back next year with hopes of breaking yet another record.
