Second Grade Curriculum Overview

English/Language Arts - Hominy Valley Elementary uses Wit & Wisdom, which is a comprehensive K-8 English Language Arts curriculum crafted to help students build the knowledge and skills they need to be successful readers, exceptional writers, and effective communicators. Students build knowledge of topics such as changes during the Autumn season, life in the early American West, Civil Rights heroes, and healthy eating choices and the digestive system.

Writing - Second grade students will be asked to write a variety of genres which include: (1) Opinion pieces; (2) Informative text; and (3) Narratives. Students will write complete paragraphs which include an introduction, topic statement, three pieces of evidence and a conclusion.

Mathematics - In Grade 2, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) extending understanding of base-ten notation; (2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; (3) using standard units of measure; and (4) describing and analyzing shapes.

Second Grade standards include adding and subtracting efficiently within 100, counting and recognizing numbers to 1000, a variety of  problem types, standard measurement, and geometry. Students build on mathematical strategies including decomposing numbers, place values, and relationships between addition and subtraction.

Social Studies - Our Social Studies strands in 2nd grade include: (1) History; (2) Economics and Financial Literacy; (3) Culture; and (4) Geography and Environmental Literacy.

Second graders continue to use and reinforce skills introduced in kindergarten and first grade. They examine a variety of neighborhoods and recognize the multiple roles of individuals and families.

Science - The focus for second grade students is analyzing collected data over a period of time to make predictions and understand changes. Science Concepts: animal life cycles, changes in weather, changes in properties of matter, sound.
