This year’s Elevating Math Competition brought together some of the brightest fourth, fifth, and sixth grade math minds from across Buncombe County Schools (BCS) - and the results were nothing short of impressive. Students worked in teams and as individuals to tackle challenging problem-solving tasks that pushed them to think critically and collaborate creatively.

In an exciting turn, multiple schools placed first in the team division, including West Buncombe Elementary, Haw Creek Elementary, and Charles T. Koontz Intermediate. Each school showed strong teamwork, perseverance, and a love for math that shined through every round of the competition.

Elementary and Intermediate Lead Math Coach Meg McKee praised the students’ efforts.

“These students dedicate time and effort to their math clubs, and this competition serves as a well-deserved opportunity to celebrate their hard work and enthusiasm for mathematics,” she said. “The competition atmosphere brings an energy that makes math feel like a team sport—full of collaboration, excitement, and a shared sense of accomplishment.”

In addition to team honors, several students also earned first-place individual awards, proving that their mathematical skills are just as strong solo as they are in a group. These standout students solved complex problems with speed and among a competitive field of peers.

The Elevating Math Competition continues to grow each year, offering students a platform to shine, build confidence, and show just how exciting math can be.
