Izlia Shepard painting a picture on canvas.

Talent of all kinds from sports, academics, and the arts are bursting at the seams throughout the corridors of Charles D. Owen High School (OHS).

Izlia Shepard is one of those incredible students, whose artistic abilities have captivated hundreds. Izlia is a senior at OHS, and has a budding passion for art. Recently, she received the American Visionary Award. This prestigious award has led to the showcase of Izlia’s artwork at the Asheville Museum of Art. Izlia said this piece was important for her to shed light on given the current circumstances in the world.

“The piece I did that is on display downtown is titled ‘Red Lipstick’ and is a comic style artwork,” said Izlia. “I pulled ideas from world events unfolding in front of our eyes. I wanted to bring to light the struggles those in other countries endure in hopes others feel moved, and ready to make a difference when seeing this piece.”

Izlia's passion for art jumps off the canvas, and is her way to try to make a difference in the world around her.

“Art has alway been a form of media that is limitless, timeless and so full of passion,” she said. “Any human emotion possible can be conveyed through any form of art. There’s always been a desire to create within me for as long as I can remember. It’s become a way for me to be able to express myself as well as my viewpoints.”

Art teacher Diane Birken is beyond thrilled for the achievements that Izlia has accomplished during her time at OHS.

“Izlia is a devoted and hardworking artist whose talents amaze me daily,” she said. “I have never had a student nominated for the American Visionary Award. It is the highest award any of my students have ever won. I am proud of her!”

Izlia dreams of continuing her artistic career after graduation.

“I would love to continue with art for the rest of my life,” she explained. “I plan on studying animation at Savannah College of Art and Design, where I’ll be able to use my artistic merit to create stories that I want to share. I also want to be an entrepreneur, starting my own business and being able to make a living through what I love.”
