Last Friday, students closed their laptops for the day and took a field trip to Gaining Ground Farm, a local vegetable farm that plays an important role in our community by supplying fresh produce to area farmer’s markets and restaurants. The visit was both educational and hands-on, giving students a firsthand look at where their food comes from and what it takes to grow it.
One of the highlights of the trip was seeing the garlic harvest in progress. Students rolled up their sleeves and joined in, helping to clean and prepare freshly harvested garlic for drying and storage, a surprisingly satisfying (and aromatic) task!
But the day wasn’t all work. Gaining Ground Farm is also home to a variety of animals that charmed everyone. Students got the chance to gently hold fluffy baby chicks. A pair of friendly cows said hello and then put on a show for everyone as they followed students around the farm. Plus a rather loud but amusing turkey strutted around the barnyard like it owned the place. And last but not least, Flower the bunny had everyone wishing they too had a pet bunny that travelled around in a backpack!
The trip was not only fun, but it also deepened students' understanding of agriculture, sustainability, and food sources. Many left with a new appreciation for the hard work that goes into producing the food we eat every day. A big thank you to Gaining Ground Farm, who showed us that farms are more than just fields—they’re vibrant, living systems filled with life, learning, and community connections.
